Word document recovery
Recommended Solution: Data Recovery
Losing a Word document can be devastating. It could be your manuscript, your secret recipes, your homework, or the report that your boss wants on his desk tomorrow. When we use Microsoft Word, we trust it to guard the days of work we spend pouring ourselves in to our report or essay. So what do you do when your document is accidentally deleted, or destroyed during a Microsoft Word crash? Sometimes, even Microsoft's vaunted Auto Recovery can't help you - and that's where Data Recovery comes in.
Recovering data when Word crashes
If you've lost all or part of your Word file due to a Word crash, Microsoft Word Document Recovery may be able to retrieve an automatically-saved version of your document. This feature is far from perfect, however; if the crash was abrupt enough, or happened at the wrong time, you may be left with an empty or corrupt Word file. To see if the Document Recovery feature saved your file, just restart Word - the Document Recovery pane will appear on the left side of the program.
Corrupted Word files
Even if your files aren't lost when Word crashes, it's still possible for your Word documents to become corrected. Most of the time, Microsoft Word will automatically attempt to repair your word files. If it doesn't, the process for forcing Word to repair your Word files is simple. Choose the "Open" command from the File (or Office Orb) menu. Select the corrupted Word file, and press the little down arrow beside the "Open" button. The "Open and Repair" option will force Word to try and repair your corrupt Word file.
Getting back deleted Word documents
If your Word file is deleted, missing, or irreparably corrupted, your only chance of getting the document back is to employ some advanced data recovery techniques. Our favorite software for this, ParetoLogic Data Recovery, rolls several technically-advanced tricks in to its recovery functionality. In our opinion, ParetoLogic Data Recovery deserves high marks for usability because of the way it handles deleted Word files - it can fully preview most Word documents that it finds, meaning you can be sure you're recovering the exact data you want.

Trust Data Recovery to recover your Word documents
ParetoLogic Data Recovery can preview and recover any type of Word file: DOC files (from Word 97 - 2003), DocX files (from Word 2007), WPS files (from Microsoft Works), and non-proprietary formats like TXT and RTF. The scan process will take approximately 3 minutes on most computers. When the software is finished its direct hard drive scan, you will be presented with a list of recoverable files. You can sort this list by any data type (Word files, in this case) and preview each recoverable file. Recoverable Word files are also assigned a quality rating based on how intact or corrupt they are. Finally, once you've selected the data you want to recover, Data Recovery places all of the undeleted files in to a folder that you specify.
